Lawn Establishment From Seed

Seed Bed Preparation

The better you prepare the soil, the better your lawn will be!

Step 1 - Remove all rubbish and stones.

Step 2 - Dig over or rotovate the site.

Step 3 - Assess the soil structure. If the soil is heavy and clay-like, work in plenty of compost and sharp sand and/or add a good loamy topsoil.
If the soil is very light and sandy it may be advisable to add a good amount of peat or compost to hold some moisture in dry conditions and to hold some nutrition for the young grass plants.

Step 4 - Adjust any height variations or contours to suit your needs either by adding additional soil or raking bac soil, taking care not to rake off too much exposing subsoil which is low in nutrition and can cause a variation in the lawn.

Step 5 - Firm the soil with a light roller or tread it down with your feet. The soil needs to be firm but not compact.

Step 6 - Rake the soil to give a final level and a tilth for the seed.

Step 7 - Sprinkle on the seed at the desired rate.

Step 8 - A very light rake over to cover most of the seed.

Note:- Seed left on top will often germinate but it is obviously left exposed to the wildlife.

Note:- It is often advisable to add a good quality pre-seed fertiliser at step 6 raking it in well
